Art Basel Miami Beach

The marquee contemporary-art fair, launched in 2002, that turns Miami Beach into a global art capital every December.

What It Is

Art Basel Miami Beach is the U.S. edition of the Swiss art fair Art Basel, held each December at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The main fair gathers galleries from around the world to sell work to collectors, but the event that matters culturally is the sprawl around it: a week of satellite fairs, museum openings, brand parties, and pop-ups that spills across the causeway into Wynwood and the Design District. The fair itself is the anchor; the surrounding scene is the phenomenon.

Why It Matters

Before 2002, Miami was not a serious art town. The fair's arrival gave the city a recurring reason for the international art world to show up, and the effect compounded. Collectors who came for a long weekend started buying property. Galleries opened. The Rubell and Margulies collections gained an audience. The energy seeded the gallery boom in Wynwood and the luxury-retail turn of the Design District. Art Basel is the clearest single illustration of the broader Art Basel Effect: a Swiss institution choosing Miami because the city already functioned as a crossroads for Latin American wealth and global capital. The art followed the money, and then the money followed the art.
