Rubell Museum

The Rubell family's deep contemporary-art collection, relocated to a sprawling Allapattah complex in 2019.

What It Is

The Rubell Museum houses the contemporary-art collection of Don and Mera Rubell and their family, one of the most significant private holdings in the country, known for backing artists early in their careers. After decades in a Wynwood building, the museum opened a much larger home in 2019 in Allapattah, a cluster of former industrial buildings reworked into galleries, a restaurant, and a research library. The family later opened a second outpost in Washington.

Why It Matters

The Rubells were among the figures who pulled the art world toward Miami and helped make the city a credible host for the Art Basel era. Their move to Allapattah is its own story: a working-class, heavily immigrant neighborhood next to Wynwood, now drawing the kind of cultural investment that tends to precede rising rents. The museum is a textbook instance of the Art Basel effect spilling past Wynwood into the next industrial district over.
