Phillip Frost
The Arc
Phillip Frost trained as a dermatologist before moving into the business of medicine. He built IVAX Corporation into a major generic-pharmaceutical company, which was later acquired by the Israeli firm Teva, where he went on to serve as chairman. Those deals made him one of South Florida's wealthiest figures and one of its most active philanthropists.
With his wife Patricia Frost, he directed large gifts toward education and culture. The couple are namesakes of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in downtown Miami and the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, among other institutions. The reach of the Frost name across Miami reflects the scale and breadth of that giving.
Why They Matter
Frost matters as a builder of Miami's civic infrastructure during the LatAm Capital Era, when the region's growing wealth needed institutions to match. A city positioning itself as a Latin American business capital benefits from anchors like a major science museum, and the Frost Science Museum is among the most visible. The Frost philanthropic footprint is one of the clearest examples of private fortune converted into permanent public assets in modern Miami.
