Institute of Contemporary Art Miami
What It Is
The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, known as ICA Miami, grew out of a 2014 split from an earlier museum and opened its permanent building in the Design District in 2017. The home, with its perforated metal facade and a sculpture garden out back, was developed in close partnership with Craig Robins's Dacra, the firm that remade the surrounding district. Admission is free, a deliberate choice meant to keep contemporary art accessible in a neighborhood otherwise defined by luxury retail.
Why It Matters
ICA Miami is the institutional payoff of the cultural energy unleashed by the Art Basel era: the fair brought the art world to town each December, and the city responded by building permanent homes for it. Placing the museum in the Design District folded art directly into Robins's real-estate vision, where galleries and luxury brands share the same blocks. It is a concrete expression of the Art Basel effect hardening into year-round institutions.
