Citadel
What It Is
Citadel is a hedge fund founded in 1990 by Ken Griffin, operating alongside the affiliated trading firm Citadel Securities, one of the largest market-makers in U.S. equities. For decades the firms were headquartered in Chicago. In 2022 Griffin announced that he was moving the headquarters to Miami, choosing Brickell, the city's financial district. The relocation brought one of the most prominent names in global finance to South Florida and committed the firms to a new corporate base in the heart of Miami's banking corridor. The permanent headquarters — planned as a waterfront Brickell-area tower that would rank among Florida's tallest — remains under construction, with the firms operating from interim Miami offices in the meantime.
Why It Matters
Citadel's 2022 move was the marquee event of the tech and finance migration into Miami, lending heavyweight credibility to a wave that had until then leaned more on startups and crypto than on established Wall Street power. A top-tier hedge fund choosing Brickell over New York or Chicago reframed Miami's ambitions: not just a sunbelt boomtown but a serious financial center. It accelerated the northern migration of capital and talent and reinforced Brickell's standing as a finance hub that increasingly competes with the traditional money capitals.
