Manny Diaz

Cuban-American attorney who served as mayor of the City of Miami from 2001 to 2009, a period associated with downtown growth and urban initiatives.

The Arc

Manny Diaz was born in Cuba in 1954 and came to the United States as a child. He worked as an attorney in Miami before entering elected politics, winning the City of Miami mayoralty in 2001. He was reelected and served until 2009, the limit of two terms.

His administration emphasized urban planning, parks, and downtown development, and his tenure overlapped with a wave of high-rise residential construction in and around the urban core. He chaired the U.S. Conference of Mayors during his time in office. After leaving the mayoralty he remained active in civic and policy work and later served as chair of the Florida Democratic Party.

Why They Matter

Diaz's two terms coincided with the building boom that filled out the Downtown Miami and Brickell skyline in the 2000s, a physical transformation closely tied to Miami's growth as a Latin American business hub. He is a standard reference point for the planning and development decisions of that decade.
