Martin Margulies
The Arc
Martin Margulies made his name in South Florida real estate and, over decades, assembled one of the more significant private collections of contemporary and modern art in the country. Rather than keep it private, he opened it to the public in Wynwood as The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse — a large exhibition space that fit naturally into a district of converted industrial buildings. The collection arrived as Wynwood was shifting from a warehouse zone into an arts neighborhood, a transformation closely tied to the rise of Art Basel Miami Beach and the broader Art Basel effect.
Why They Matter
Margulies is one of the collectors who gave Wynwood substance beyond its murals. A serious, openly accessible collection signaled that the neighborhood's art reputation rested on more than street painting and nightlife, and it tied Wynwood into the international art calendar that now defines the Wynwood / Art Basel era. The Warehouse also channels proceeds toward charitable causes, which has made it a fixture of the local arts and philanthropic landscape.
